Wessex Section Forthcoming Events

Wessex Section Meetings 2007/8

The last meeting at Parkstone Yacht Club was exceptionally well attended to hear David Hailes give the second part of his account of his cruise from Poole to Denmark.

It was a very well illustrated and informative presentation covering the Dutch canals, passages inside the Frisian Islands, the Kiel Canal and ending up in exploring some delightful Danish Islands with colourful wooden buildings. An area where Sue and Nick keep their boat and spend their summers. I will also be in the Baltic this summer sailing back from Finland, so again your Section Secretaries aren’t available to lead any summer rallies.

The next meeting will be a social on the 18th September when members can discuss their summer cruises.

The following programme will be confirmed at the September meeting.

October 16th: The story of Chlamys, a ship’s life boat that was converted into a cruising cutter. It was a labour of love by John Parsons, one of our members who will give the talk.

November 20th. Jim Mottram, an intrepid solo sailor in his 23ft Elizabethan, will give an account of his sail from Chichester to Ireland, then to Scotland and up in the famous wheel, a novel experience before transiting the canal through to Edinburgh.

December 14th.Members are invited to join the Solent Section for a combined centenary celebration of the founding of the Cruising Association.

January 15th: The traditional members’ slide evening when members show photographs and logs of their previous summer cruises.

February19th: Douglas Addison will describe his experiences in sailing his new boat back from Finland with many stops on the way.

March18th. Speaker to be confirmed but is expected to be someone who has spent many years on a voyage around the world.

Apart from the celebratory dinner, the events all take place on Tuesdays at Parkstone Yacht Club at 19.00hrs for 19.30hrs. Members of other sections warmly welcome.

Douglas Addison,

Joint Section secretary
