Courses at the Royal Harwich Yacht Club

Successful completion of RYA courses will gain a Certificate. But one or two custom-made courses (eg the Suddenly Alone, ashore & afloat) are not accredited. All our instructors are Qualified to RYA Standards, our fees are often lower than those available commercially, in order to benefit Members. Training is organised in response to demand, when 3 or 4 people have expressed an interest, the course is booked. So, if you want any training (from the list below, or in addition) please let RHYC Office know about your needs. You can use a form from the Training Notice board, or just write a letter. Please tell us as early as possible, for forward planning. Most courses start between 9.00 & 9.30. Written joining information is sent to all students. Royal Harwich Yacht Club is a recognised RYA Training Centre and runs other Courses for Sailors. CA Members welcome.

RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate The short range certificate is the radio operator qualification which authorises the holder to operate a VHF radio telephone, fitted with a digital selective calling (DSC) on board any British vessel which is fitted with radio equipment. DSC is an integral part of all new VHF sets. Holders of the 'old' VHF licence will need to upgrade their qualifications if they purchase new equipment.

Next course: one day, 24th Feb or 1st March2008 . Fee £80 (£100 for non-members)

RYA Radar Sailing yachts and motor cruisers increasingly have radars on board for collision avoidance and as an aid to navigation. The International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea states that if you have Radar on board you must know how to use it. The best results are obtained only when you know how to use all the functions correctly.. The course starts from basics by looking at the way a radar set works and then goes on to demonstrate how the different adjustments and features available affect the working of the set. Other subjects covered include target definition, radar reflectors, types of Radar display, Radar plotting and the use of radar for navigation and collision avoidance.
