There must by now be quite a shortage of cliched titles remaining unturned for tales of single handed daring -do. This one tells the story of Australian Alan Nebauer sailing his 50 ft racing sloop NEWCASTLE AUSTRALIA, named after and largely sponsored by his home port near Sydney, single handed round the world from Charlston USA via Capetown, Sydney and Punta del Este in Uraguay, in the 1994 BOC Challenge Race.

It is a tale of grit and determination, and fortitude in adversity, modestly and engagingly told and giving the reader a genuine feel of what it is like to undertake such a project. There is drama, including rescue of a competitor, dismasting, and loss of rudder, and details of jury rig arrangements are included. Inevitably though it is probably one for the enthusiast for these events rather than for the reader with a more general interest in offshore cruising. - BMF
