Creek - Big Photographs of Salt Marsh; Harry Cory Wright; Salt Water Books,2nd.ed., 1999; ISBN 0-9533613-3-0; £10.00 ; CA 15642
Atlantic and Creek are two volumes in a series of big format 16 page editions on themes of the coastline of the British Isles and Ireland published by Salt Water Books. The photographer, Harry Cory Wright, captures the images on a wooden Gandolfi plate camera which produces an extremely detailed negative of 10 x 8 inches. Apart from a brief extract from the photographer's diary by way of introduction, there is no text. The images speak for themselves and speak most eloquently.
"Atlantic " contains photographs all taken overlooking the ocean from the South West tip of Ireland. Each one is a striking image showing a subtly different mood of sea and sky. Particularly impressive in each of the volumes are the wide-angled views across three pages which draw the viewer into the seascape.
"Creek" contains a series taken on the East Anglian coastline from Low Water through to High Water. The huge skies, the pencil-thin strips of land between sky and water, the intricate patterns of mud flat and water, the subtle colours of the vegetation and the haunting emptiness of the landscape create an evocative image of the East Coast that will captivate not only those who sail there.
Mr Cory Wright's photographs have no need of title or descriptive text. They are visual poetry. - PKC
