If, between sunset and sunrise, you observe a large vessel with offset masthead lights it is probably an aircraft carrier! Just one of the facts I learned from reading this attractive publication. Few of us would claim to know the Collision Regulations as well as we should and any attempt to render them more understandable and memorable is welcome.

This book sets out to do just that. It starts from the premise that many people learn the Regs. by rote in order to pass exams and then forget them because they don't have a full understanding of the need for the rules and the effects of them. The pages are attractively set out with clear graphics and an effective use of colour. The explanation of the use of Radar for collision avoidance and the absolute need to plot detected objects made such an impression that I went out and bought a pad of plotting sheets right away. I found it well worth the effort of reading right through to the end. -SB
