Starting with a short lesson on reading drawings, the editor has put together a collection of boat designs which have featured in Wooden Boat ranging from a nesting dinghy to ocean going cruisers, sail or power, and up to 70 feet in length. Each commentary gives line drawings, often with a basic layout plan of the accommodation, and a sail plan. Unfortunately due to reductions in scale these drawings are often unclear. There are discussions on proportions, and hull shapes and their effect on sea kindliness and suitability for various cruising grounds which will be of value whatever the material of construction.

Most designs are of sailing cruisers, but there is also a useful selection of motor cruisers and comments on engine size and its effect on speed and range. Who has not dreamed of designing the perfect boat? True the designs here are all of wooden boats, but the lessons to be learned and the inspiration to be gained are all relevant. Whether "in the market" or not, there is much pleasure and valuable information to be gained from browsing through this book. BH
