By 1969 slow circumnavigations were not in themselves exceptional. Considerable numbers were escaping from the rat-races - we meet many in the narrative - so, on first sight, this volume was daunting. 366 small-print pages in soft cover made me think 'Oh, no. Not another laborious tale of self-endeavour'. However; the reader warms to the authors honest account of nearly five years at sea and the detail is a tribute to disciplined observation. Even so, despite a generous dedication and her appearance throughout, one looks for a couple of chapters from his wife's viewpoint. The book's production cries out for a slightly bigger print size and brighter probably coloured, illustrations. Many interesting studies are spoiled by mundane monochrome reproduction. By far the best in the whole work appears on the cover page - Katie's near-naked pose typifies the many wonderful moments of it all. EC
