Adriatic first Volume is an Italian language guidebook to the coasts of Croatia. It is not a normal pilot book as it concentrates more on the places to visit rather than the details of harbours and moorings. It provides an historic perspective on the coastal regions of the northern Adriatic, particularly with respect to the Roman, Italian nation States such as Venice and later the Italian state itself after its formation in the late nineteenth century. There are many magnificent photographs all in colour which comprise about half of the book. Some of these are artistic whilst others are aerial photos of harbours and headlands There are 30 pages of colour maps showing the historical boundaries as they changed during the very turbulent history of the area. The text is instructive and provides not only the information about the places biased towards the navigator but also some information about the harbours and marinas. It does not provide the sort of information contained in the normal pilot books such as phone numbers, e-mail and web addresses etc. There are a number of suggested cruises starting in different places which provide some good suggestions. Finally as it is an Italian book the place names used generally are the Italian names for the towns etc rather than the Croatian ones. This could cause some difficulty if one is not aware of the names in both languages. - TP
